Retrospec Boca Rev Review | Check Out The Test Scores!
This e-trike has great performance, handling and comfort all for a great price.
For years, it seemed like the electric trike market had too few options, and not enough affordable ones. That trend has changed in recent years, and Retrospec’s Boca Rev trike we’ve been reviewing for several weeks is a highly compelling option for trike riders not looking to break the bank. Why? Simple, it executes the basics well, and includes nice touches that are often overlooked.
Arguably it’s standout trait we discovered across our miles of testing was how stable and comfortable the ride felt. It has a wide rear axle, appropriately sized tires, and a good balance to the weight displacement throughout the ride. Trikes have different handling in general vs their two-wheeled counterparts, but assuming you know how to ride, you’ll quickly see how stable this feels when moving even when taking that bend in a road.
Comfort is another standout element to the ride. There is a generously paddled saddle with a back rest, a low 17.5” standover height, and a large seatpost that adjust for optimal leg extension. Sizing can be constrained for the tallest of riders with a shorter rise to the handlebar, but assuming you fit the ride, it’s quite comfortable and easy to navigate the roads on it.
This is an e-trike afterall, and Retrospec did a good job with the motor and battery. The trike has a nice spread of speedsa cross the six different PAS levels, and the whole system is certified to UL standards.
For a competitively priced e-trike, the Boa Rev doesn’t have many glaring weaknesses. Most of the factors we consider in our review processes yielded good to great results as you’ll see in our testing sections down below.
Class 2 (throttle to 14 mph)
- The Boca Rev is extremely stable. It has one of the widest axles we’ve measured on a delta trike, which makes it feel planted when riding and taking corners at appropriate speeds.
- Great value in terms of performance. It achieved good to excellent results across our standardized tests.
- Nice comfort. Thoughtful geometry and frame construction position the rider ergonomically, complemented by a plush saddle with a supportive backrest.
- Solid power output. The motor engages smoothly at lower PAS levels and delivers a stronger punch at higher settings. The hub motor powers both rear wheels via a differential for better traction and performance.
- Great safety. The hydraulic brakes have excellent stopping power, the trike’s balance-friendly design enhances stability, and integrated head and taillights (with brake light functionality) improve visibility and safety.
- Fits a wide range of riders. Suitable for riders 5’5” and taller, with a high total payload capacity of 500 lbs (350 lbs for the rider) – among the highest in e-trikes.
- It’s both UL2849 & UL2271 certified.
- Limited handlebar adjustment for taller riders. There’s excellent leg extension, but the folding stem limits the telescoping handlebar, potentially making hand placement uncomfortably low for some.

Retrospec Boca Rev Review: Speed Test
You can see a breakdown of the speeds achievable on the Boca Rev in the graph above. Overall, there’s solid speed distribution across the six available power levels, with each PAS level serving a clear purpose. I was a little surprised that Retrospec chose six different PAS levels for a trike that tops out at 14 mph, but the distinctions between them are noticeable.
The Boca Rev’s 500W motor delivers solid power and acceleration. The first three PAS levels provide gentle acceleration, while the higher levels add a noticeable but still controllable punch.
The design, featuring a hub motor that powers both rear wheels via a differential, is my preferred trike drive system. Mid-drives are expensive, and front-hub motors come with handling quirks that require some getting used to. This setup strikes a “just right” balance.
The differential enables the rear wheels to spin at different speeds when necessary, ensuring safe and predictable handling, even during turns (provided you take turns at slower speeds as is needed with a delta trike).
I also appreciate Retrospec’s decision to use a single-speed drivetrain. Nearly half of the electric trikes we’ve tested feature a derailleur and a 7-speed cassette, which feels unnecessary given the lower top speed of most trikes. You rarely need to change gears, and with six PAS levels, you can effectively use them as a substitute for gears, making hills easier to climb and flats faster to zip across.
While I wouldn’t mind a settings option to reduce the PAS levels to three—since I largely stick to PAS three, four, and six—that’s a minor nitpick. Overall, the speed options are well-suited to the diverse needs of trike riders, who often have varying baseline speed preferences.
Retrospec Boca Rev Review: Range Test
We fully charged the Boca Rev’s 500Wh battery and conducted a max-power, real-world test. The results showed a solid range of 23.32 miles. This puts it at the median for e-trike performance, slightly below our average of 25.96 miles.
Retrospec claims a range of up to 49 miles, which I find realistic based on our high-power results. We recently shifted to exclusively testing e-trikes at max power since most models achieve between 50–100 miles at the lowest PAS setting, typically at a leisurely 5–7 mph. Testing at such slow speeds can be challenging for our team, but given past results with similar motor and battery pairings, the 49-mile claim seems entirely plausible.
In practice, most delta-style trike riders cover no more than 20 miles in a single day, so this range should be more than sufficient for typical use. However, it’s important to note that our test was conducted without additional weight. If you’re planning to haul cargo in the rear basket, your range will likely be lower.
While it’s not a testing not it is a related one: Retrospec has ensured full UL certification for the Boca Rev. It meets UL 2849 and 2271 safety standards, offering peace of mind with a safe electical system, and compliance where needed in certain states.
Retrospec Boca Rev Review: Hill Test
The Boca Rev delivered impressive performance during our standard Hell Hole hill climb test.
Using throttle only, it posted the second-fastest time we’ve ever recorded on an e-trike (as of this writing) going up the hill in a mere 1:40. *The pedal-assisted result was also just four seconds shy of topping the leaderboard posting a nice 1:37. While speed alone doesn’t define hill-climbing performance—and we generally advocate for slower speeds on e-trikes for safety (which is why we appreciate the 14 mph limit)—the Boca Rev offers the best of both worlds: fast, controlled hill climbing.
Though we didn’t test the trike at Hell Hole with added weight, we did perform loaded rides around town. With or without 50 lbs of sandbags in the rear basket (plus my 235 lbs of personal weight), the trike handled hills well. It delivers solid power even at lower PAS levels, making it capable of tackling everyday inclines.
The drivetrain gear ratio is a solid choice. It allows you to assist with pedaling on climbs without feeling the need for additional gears. That said, as our testing showed, you can easily rely on the throttle to motor your way to the top of most hills, too.
*Note: Our hill tester completed the Hell Hole climb using PAS 5 instead of the Boca Rev’s top power level, PAS 6. We performed additional hill tests at a comparable location near our office and found that PAS 6 averaged 10% faster than PAS 5. The reported results for Hell Hole reflect the expected PAS 6 performance.
Retrospec Boca Rev Review: Brake Test
The Boca Rev delivered excellent results in our brake test, stopping from 14.5 mph in an average of 11’1”. This is the second-best average we’ve ever recorded.
That said, it’s worth noting that e-trikes often have varying top speeds, so they do deviate slightly from the standardized way we test e-bikes as outlined above. Still, the brakes perform exceptionally well, stopping the trike quickly and effectively with little more than a gentle squeeze.
There are two standout features I appreciate about the brakes: its a hydraulic system, and it uses two rotors instead of three.
The Boca Rev uses hydraulic brakes, which are typically more powerful than mechanical or rim brakes. This is particularly beneficial for seniors, who make up a significant portion of trike buyers, as the brakes require only a mild or firm squeeze to bring the trike to a stop. Unlike some systems where you need to apply a lot of force, this setup is both user-friendly and effective.
Retrospec opted for a dual-rotor braking system rather than a three-rotor setup. A single rotor mounted by the axle stops both rear wheels, eliminating the need for a cable splitter. This decision keeps costs lower and simplifies maintenance while delivering reliable stopping power.
Some riders may expect three rotors for a three-wheeled trike, but in our experience, the dual-rotor design performs just as well, if not better, while avoiding the mixed results we’ve seen with cable splitters clamping two rear rotors from a single lever.
Finally, since the Boca Rev is a trike, there’s no need for a kickstand. The brakes also feature a convenient parking brake function, ensuring the trike stays securely in place when parked.
Retrospec Boca Rev Review: Ride Quality
The first thing I evaluate on any trike is its stability. Several factors influence a trike’s overall stability, but two straightforward ways to achieve it are by ensuring spacious rear wheel spacing (while keeping it narrow enough to fit through a doorway) and opting for shorter tire diameters (taller designs on three wheels are more prone to tipping).
The Boca Rev strikes a nice balance with one of the widest axle spacings we’ve seen, paired with 20 x 3” tires. The wide base and low center of gravity give it a stable, balanced feel, allowing for greater confidence when moving quickly in straight lines. Its well-distributed weight further enhances stability, even when turning—though, as with any trike, we recommend taking turns slowly and cautiously.
The tires’ width adds to the stability, with a touch of tread providing extra traction. While it’s not designed for intense off-roading, it handles finer gravel on flat roads well, giving you a bit more grip when needed.
The Boca Rev includes a host of practical features: fenders and a chain guard to keep you clean, a headlight and taillight (which also functions as a brake light) for visibility, and reflectors for added safety. A rear basket comes standard, making it easy to haul gear. Additionally, the cushy saddle and adjustable backrest make the ride exceptionally comfortable, perfect for exploring the neighborhood or taking longer trips.
Some people might bemoan the lack of suspension fork, but on a ride that has you sitting so upright, and while on a plush saddle, I didn’t feel it needed it, and the steel fork felt just fine to me.
The 17.5” standover height enhances approachability, though the recommended rider height starts at 5’5”—a bit taller than average. If needed, you could cut down the excess seat post length to accommodate shorter riders.
The frame is available in Matcha or Matte Graphite paint options and features a foldable design, similar to other trikes like the Lectric XP Trike or Mokwheel Granite. While the folded dimensions aren’t the most compact, the collapsing stem might make it easier to load into an SUV. Fortunately, the folding clamp is sturdy, and the frame doesn’t suffer from unnecessary flex when riding.
One downside of the folding design is the limited rise of the telescoping handlebars. While the trike offers great leg extension for riders up to 6’5”, taller riders might find the hand placement lower than ideal.
The cockpit is clean and simple, with no shifter to clutter the layout. The display is large, bright, and easy to read, and the trike has a polished look thanks to its neatly braided cables.
Overall, the Boca Rev offers excellent value. It’s competitively priced among the best electric trikes we’ve tested and excels in comfort, handling, and performance, all while keeping costs relatively low.
