Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Electric Cargo Bike Rack Review [VIDEO]

Hollywood Racks has been very progressive in developing many electric bike racks for vehicles and the latest addition to their line up is an eCargo bike option. 

The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE for Cargo Bikes accommodates longer and wider cargo bikes that also generally weigh more than traditional bikes.

This rack can support eBikes up to 80 pounds of weight per bike!

That can be 2 eCargo bikes or a variety of eBike types, including fat tire eBikes. 

The base price for the Sport Rider SE for Cargo Bikes is $439.99.

A good test of the Sport Rider SE for Cargo Bikes was hauling the Xtracycle Edgerunner electric cargo bike with the wide U Tube lower rails and the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC SL eMTB.

The Edgerunner as it is set up weighs 68.3 pounds and the Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC SL as it is set up weighs 55.5 pounds. That is a total of 123.8 pounds.

The rack itself weighs 51.8 pounds in this review.

The rack held these 2 eBikes well with minimal movement and a lot of that is attributed to the “No Wobble” system that we will look at in a bit. 

In this view you can see that even with the U Tube lower rails on the Xtracycle cargo bike it still has plenty of room between the Cube eMTB.

This rack is versatile with the ability to carry a wide variety of eBikes that include eCargo bikes, plus size tire eBikes (3″ tire width), fat bike tire (5″ tire width) eBikes, and conventionally sized eBikes. 

There are wheel holder width options available when ordering the rack.

Another testament to the strength of this rack is how it is able to tilt back to open the rear hatch of the car while supporting up to 160 pounds of total bike weight.

I found that pushing up a little on the bikes helped to unload the pin that is removed to allow the tilt function of the rack. 

This is a view of the rack system tilted back after the snapper pin has been removed and the front spring pin has been retracted.

The front and rear spring pins lock the rack into the different positions: folded position, carrying position, and tilted position. 

Here is a look at the rack in the folded position. It is easy and quick to rotate the rack into the folded position using the spring pin system.

The Sport Rider SE features the “No Wobble System” which is nice because some hitch mounted racks have a tendency to wobble.

This is a simple and quick system to set up and tighten for solid attachment. The video below demonstrates how it works.  

The “No Wobble System” works well and provides a solid attachment of the rack to the vehicle. When driving around with both bikes the rack felt very stable and secure. 

As you can see in the video the locking system is also built into the hitch pin. The same key is used for all locking systems on the rack. 

The top tube of the bike is supported by the hook clamp that stabilizes the bike on the rack.

If you have a bike with a step thru frame Hollywood Racks sells an adapter that provides a virtual top tube for the hook to secure the bike. 

The hook clamps ratchet along a vertical post between the bikes and each have a locking mechanism that uses the same key for the hitch pin and cable lock that comes with the rack. 

The wheel holders for this rack have been structurally reinforced to carry the extra weight of an eBike. There are wheel holders available for fat tire bikes with tires up to 5″ wide. 

Each wheel holder has an adjustment knob to move the wheel holder along the wheel support tube.

It’s a good idea to set the wheel holder position before loading the bike on the rack because with the extra weight of an eBike it is somewhat difficult to move the wheel holder after the bike is on the rack.

Hollywood Racks recommends removing the battery from the bike to make loading onto the rack easier and that will help with moving the wheel holders if needed. 

They also recommend placing the front wheel in the wheel holder first and then lifting the back of the bike and placing the rear wheel to avoid picking up the entire bike at one time. It does make loading an eBike easier.

The wheel strapping system is a pretty basic velcro system that does the job of holding each wheel in place.

The 8 foot cable lock that comes with the rack uses the same key that is used for the hook clamps and hitch pin locks. 

The cable lock is good for securing the wheels and frame to the rack. 

Installation was pretty straightforward with the included instructions and the following video as a general guide (similar Hollywood rack, not the exact rack in this review):

Hollywood Racks does make it clear that the Sport Rider SE for Cargo Bikes is not to be used on any trailer, fifth wheel, or towed vehicle.

1 eCargo bike and a traditional eBike up to 3″ wide tires: $439.99

2 eCargo bikes: $449.99

1 eCargo bike and and a fat eBike up to 5″ wide tires: $449.99

The Sport Rider SE for Cargo Bikes is one the pricier side of platform hitch racks but it is nice to be able to carry a variety of eBikes that include eCargo bikes and eFat bikes. 

Hollywood Racks offers many other electric bike racks including a rack that will carry an electric trike!
