Riding the Biktrix Stunner:
Overall there are some characteristics of the Biktrix Stunner that really stand out when riding this eBike. To summarize they are:
- Comfortable and easy going ride feel
- Powerful 750 watt mid drive with assist up to 28 mph
- Easy get on and off step-thru frame
The Look & Feel of the Biktrix Stunner
The Stunner has an easy going and casual look to it with the beach cruiser styling and the step-thru frame design.
The frame’s geometry focuses on a laid back seat tube angle that gives the bike a comfortable feel and makes it easier to place your feet on the ground at a stop.
With a wide step-thru area that has a height of 18.5″ off the ground, the Stunner is easy to get on and off.
The swooping top tube of the frame adds to the Stunner cruiser bike style.
There is also the triangle frame option available.
6061 aluminum is the frame material of the frame and there is some internal cable routing through the large downtube for a clean look and some cable protection.
Furthering the clean look is the battery integration into the downtube that also is a good location for the overall handling and balance of the bike.
Biktrix offers 4 different battery sizes with these corresponding prices:
48V 11.6ah for $2,099 USD (Battery size of the bike in this testing)
48V 14ah for $2,399 USD
48V 17ah for $2,499 USD
48V 21.5ah for $2,799 USD
The main battery casing is aluminum with plastic ends. The battery casing has a durable look and feel to it.
There are 3 color options for the Stunner: Cream, Prussian Blue, or Charcoal.
The Cream and Prussian Blue are available in the step-thru frame style and the Charcoal is available in the step-over and step-thru.
A lot of the beach cruiser look and feel comes from the wide and swept back handlebars that provide a comfortable and upright ride feel.
That upright ride style can be adjusted with the stem as the angle can be adjusted to provide a short and upright position.
The stem can also be set to the lower angles for a lower and longer reach position.
Adding to the cruiser style is the Velo Oversized Cruiser saddle that has a comfortable feel.
Another feature adding to the comfortable ride feel is the Suntour Nex suspension fork with 70mm of travel.
It has active suspension performance that does a good job of smoothing out rough roads.
The Stunner is setup well to handle some dirt road riding and the Suntour Nex suspension fork makes dirt road exploring that much easier.
Now it’s time to take a closer look at the high performance capabilities of the Biktrix Stunner!
The Stunner may have a mellow look to it but this eBike can really fly if you want it too.
The 750 watt Bafang mid drive really gives the Stunner some serious kick on all kinds of terrain in the higher assist levels.
On the flatter terrain the motor provides quick pedal assist up to 28 mph and the mid drive does a good job of maintaining speed on hilly terrain by leveraging the bike’s drivetrain.
At the lower assist levels the ride mellows out so that you can enjoy a casual cruise around the neighborhood at lower speeds.
The Bafang motor uses a cadence sensor based pedal assist system that provides a substantial amount of initial acceleration that is helpful for getting through an intersection quickly or for help with getting started on a hill.
The initial kick of power does take some getting used to in the higher pedal assist levels as it can be a bit abrupt when starting from a complete stop.
Another assist option is the twist grip throttle that provides assist up to 20 mph and it can be used with or without pedaling.
There is also a walk mode that moves the bike at a 2-3 mph and helps when walking the bike up hill/stairs.
The Biktrix Stunner is a Class 3 electric bike per eBike laws that are applicable in many US states.
The mid-drive motor does create a whirring noise which dissipates a little at the higher speeds due to wind noise.
The combination of your pedal power and the mid drive motor power is routed through the Sturmey Archer 5 speed internally geared rear hub (transmission) on its way to turning the rear wheel.
This internally geared hub is a nice alternative to the traditional cogs and derailleur system found on many bikes because it looks clean and is basically no maintenance.
One drawback to many internally geared hubs is that some of them don’t shift well under power.
The Sturmey Archer on the Stunner shifts okay under power when going to the higher gear range for more speed on flatter terrain.
It doesn’t shift well going to the lower gear range under power. An example of this is when you want to shift down while climbing a hill.
Biktrix does have a sticker on the handlebars that recommends a pause in the pedaling to shift and then resume pedaling.
It is also possible to slightly engage one of the brake lever sensors to stop the motor power for a second (while still pedaling lightly) to shift down without losing too much momentum.
Now let’s take a closer look at the integrated frame battery.
In this testing & review the Stunner came equipped with the base model 48V 11.6ah 557Wh lithium battery that is semi-integrated into the downtube of the frame.
This low and centered location combined with the low and centered mid-drive motor gives the Stunner a very balanced feel for overall bike handling and when picking the bike up.
Fully charging the 48V 11.6ah battery takes about 5 to 6 hours and it can be charged on or off the bike.
The battery can be removed from the bike by unlocking it with one of the supplied keys (2 provided) and then rotating it to the left side of the bike and off.
The battery weighs 7.2 pounds and removing it brings the weight of the Biktrix Stunner down to 55.0 pounds which makes it a little easier to load on a car rack.
Now let’s take a look at the controls and display.
The large center mounted color display packs in a lot of info in with the important info in large text for easy reading on the road.
Here is a look at all the info presented on the display:
The Switchover area provides information on: trip distance, odometer, range, ride time, max speed, average speed.
The display has a backlight that is very bright for easy visibility in low light conditions.
On the left side of the handlebars is the control pad and twist grip throttle.
The control pad adjusts the pedal assist levels with the up and down arrows and the center on/off button cycles through some of the ride stats on the display.
The twist grip throttle has a linear spectrum of assist from just a little assist up to full power with max throttle speed of 20 mph.
The throttle is helpful when using the lower pedal assist levels to give you an additional boost to get through an intersection quickly or for some additional help getting over a hill.
The Kenda 26″ x 2.3″ tires have a good on and off road tread pattern for making the Stunner a versatile eCruiser.
It is nice to have these tires for some off-road exploring and they do provide a bit of traction for dirt road fun.
These Kenda tires are built with the “K-Shield” which is puncture resistant and they have reflective sidewall stripes.
Slowing the Stunner down is handled by the Tektro Aries mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors front and rear.
The Aries provide substantial stopping power and they do a good job of slowing down the Stunner from the 28 mph range.
In general at these higher speeds you need to be scanning the road ahead and preparing for a stop with more stopping distance.
There are sensors in each brake lever that will stop the assist as soon as either brake lever is engaged.
It would be nice for the brake levers to have a reach adjustment to fit smaller hand sizes.
The Stunner comes with a well rounded selection of accessories ready for commuting, errand running, and exploring.
The sturdy aluminum rear rack has a spring clip to hold items on the top while still providing attachment for panniers and bags on the sides.
The front light provides a good beam for seeing the road and being seen by others on the road. It runs off the eBike battery so that you don’t need to worry about charging separate batteries for the front light.
There is also a rear light that has flashing & solid modes and it runs off 2 AAA batteries.
Rounding out the accessory package are full coverage plastic fenders, a bell, and kickstand.
Okay, let’s see how the Biktrix Stunner did out on the open road!
Biktrix Stunner Range Test Results:
Here is the real world information on how the Biktrix Stunner electric bike performed on a riding circuit that includes hills, flats, traffic, wind (when available) etc.
While testing these bikes I like to put them through the toughest conditions to see where their bottom line is in regards to range and speed. I tested the Biktrix Stunner in the highest pedal assist level (Level 5) with average pedaling on paved roads.
Range: As you can see from the GPS info that I recorded, the Biktrix Stunner traveled 23.3 miles and did a total elevation gain of around 2,000 ft. Considering that I weigh 190 lbs and I pedaled at an average pace this is pretty good range for a 48 Volt 11.6 ah battery pack (557 Watt Hours) with a 750 watt motor assisting up to 28 mph.
Watt hours are the total energy in a battery pack and it is based on the volts x amp hours of a pack. This is a way to compare the size of the “gas tank” of electric bikes.
Please keep in mind that if you pedal more, weigh less than me, ride slower and/or you use the bike in terrain that is not as hilly you will get more range. These results are from tough testing.
Speed: The Biktrix Stunner will assist up to 28 mph with pedal assist and there is the throttle that will assist up to 20 mph.
Weight: The Biktrix Stunner tips the scales at 62.2 lbs which is on the heavier side for an electric bike like this. Removing the battery brings it down to around 55.0 pounds which makes it a little easier to load onto a car rack.
The weight distribution of the Biktrix Stunner is good with the low and centered battery and a mid-drive motor.
Pros:
Comfortable Cruiser: The Biktrix Stunner has an easy going and comfortable ride style. The relaxed frame geometry makes it easy to put your feet on the ground at a stop while sitting on the saddle. The wide and swept back handlebars are comfortable and upright for easy visibility all around. The suspension fork does a nice job of taking the edge off of rough roads.
Easy Get On & Off: With the wide and low step-thru frame the Stunner is very easy to get on and off. This feature further gives it that comfortable and easy going ride style that makes it approachable and fun to ride.
High Performance: The 750 watt mid drive with up to 28 mph of pedal assist is pretty fun for an eCruiser! By routing the power through the drivetrain the Stunner can zip up hills pretty well too. The Sturmey Archer 5 speed internally geared rear hub is a clean and low maintenance drivetrain when compared to the traditional cogs & derailleur systems. While it has high performance capabilities the Stunner also offers a mellow ride at the lower assist levels.
Cons:
Shifting: It is difficult to shift to the lower gear range under power which generally happens when climbing a hill. It is possible to slightly engage one of the brake lever sensors to stop the motor power for a second (while still pedaling lightly) to shift down without losing too much momentum.
Weight: At 62.2 pounds the Stunner is on the heavier side of electric bikes. Removing the battery brings it down to 55.0 pounds which helps a little when lifting the bike on to a car rack for instance.
Conclusion:
Overall the Biktrix Stunner is a fun, comfortable, and high performance eCruiser!
It is a versatile eBike with a wide range of performance capabilities up to 28 mph, hill climbing strength with the 750 watt mid drive, and paved/dirt road abilities.
The easy going ride style and low step-thru design make it a very easy and fun to ride.
The Stunner is well suited for for commuting, errand running, and all around fun rides on the open road.
The base price of $2,099 is good for all the features (28 mph, 750 watt mid-drive, frame battery, suspension fork) and quality components from Bafang, Suntour, Sturmey Archer, Tektro, Kenda, etc.
Please keep in mind that this is a relatively short term test. This testing can’t really give you the long term review of durability and reliability. My thoughts on the quality of this bike are from previous experiences with similar bikes.
