ABUS Pedelec+ Helmet Review: Built in Rain Cover & Rear LED Light

Electric bike specific gear is starting to emerge as eBikes become more and more popular. 

It is not much of a surprise that ABUS is one of the first to launch their Pedelec+ helmet that is based on their commuter style helmets with a focus on eBikes. 

ABUS is known for innovative, durable, and useful locks, helmets, and bags. 

The Pedelec+ helmet has some interesting features like the built in rain cover, integrate rear LED visibility light, and Fidlock magnetic lock strap connection. 

Pedelec+ Helmet

The construction according to ABUS is a “double shell in-mold for durable fusion of the outer shell and the shock absorbing helmet material (EPS)”. 

9 air inlets and 4 outlets provide a fair bit of airflow. This isn’t the coolest helmet I have ridden with but it seems to be built more for durability and function rather than providing a lot of airflow.

With an electric bike you don’t have to worry about the airflow as much as a non electric bike because the pedal assist helps with keeping you cooler. 

ABUS states that the Pedelec+ design has “deep temple and neck protection”. That does seem to be the case and it is evident in the way that the helmet fits.

I tested the large size and it felt like it was sitting low around my head and it slightly rested on my ears. It is a different ride feel when compared to performance style bike helmets and it further underscores the point that this helmet is focused on providing a lot of protection for your head. 

I also noticed that the Pedelec+ feels a little heavier than a typical performance helmet but I did get used to that after a few rides. 

There is netting in the front vents of the helmet to keep those pesky bugs out!

A small visor adds some style and helps a little when riding in the sun. It is not very adjustable up or down but it is removable if you prefer that.

The Pedelec+ has standard features like the rear dial adjustment to create a snug fit.

This is the Fidlock magnetic buckle that is very easy to secure once you get used to the attachment and release directions of sliding it together or apart.

The magnetic characteristic does make it easier to connect and the connection feels very solid. It did not come apart by accident during any of the test rides. 

As the arrow indicates you slide the buckle forward to open. Also, there is some padding to make the buckle under your chin more comfortable. 

The rain cover is cleverly housed in the back compartment of the helmet. 

Pulling on the top of the rain cover tab deploys the rain cover for use. 

The rain cover almost complete covers the vents while still allowing some airflow through the lower part of the front vents.

The rain cover also has some reflectors on the front sides and you can also see that the rear vents still provide airflow. 

The rain cover has been designed so that the rear LED light can still be seen when the rain cover is being used. 

Here is a look inside the rain cover compartment. It has enough room to make stuffing the rain cover back in fairly easy. 

The built in rear LED light is a very nice addition because a light mounted on the helmet is very eye catching and makes you hard to miss. It is a good light for being seen at night but it is not bright enough for daytime visibility. 

There are 2 modes for the rear light: solid mode and flashing mode. They are cycled through by pushing on the light itself.

The light is powered by a small watch style battery that ABUS states will last 1 to 2 years. 1 year of battery life is based on daily use for 20-30 minutes/day. The battery is replaceable. 

It is also nice to have the integrated light because it is always with you as long as you are wearing your helmet. It’s one less thing to worry about when you are headed out the door for a ride.

There are also a few reflectors on the helmet that help with being seen at night. 

The ABUS Pedelec+ comes in 3 different colors (black, silver, blue) and in 2 sizes: medium and large.

The Pedelec+ is a good helmet built with the eBiker in mind. It focuses on a solid construction with the temple and neck protection and the built in rain cover and rear LED light are helpful features. 

ABUS also offers other urban style helmets that are also a good fit for eBiking.
