Hi Joe, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, we haven’t tested any trikes that specifically state they can accommodate riders over 325-330 lbs. Both the XP Trike and RadTrike have total payload capacities of 415 lbs, which is intended to include both the rider and cargo weight. The RadTrike has the most powerful motor, so if you wanted to take a gamble on one that might work, that may be an option. If we see anything that fits the bill, we’ll let you know!

Comment on Tenways AGO X Review by John S. Bozick https://electricbikereport.com/tenways-ago-x-review/comment-page-1/#comment-775792 Wed, 08 Jan 2025 17:57:17 +0000 https://electricbikereport.com/?p=43034#comment-775792 In reply to Nima Vahidimanesh.

Hi Nima, thanks for the question! I apologize for the delay, I had to consider this one quite a bit. Both bikes are great, and they are similar in motor power and battery capacity, but I think they may be best for slightly different types of riders. The AGO X features good components that I would expect to last. It has a wider gearing range, so it’s likely better for steeper hills, although it was somewhat slower in our Hill Test. I’d say it feels a bit more spartan in terms of comfort, though I did enjoy its slightly more stretched-out riding position and wider handlebars. The CrossCore’s main components are made by Yamaha, so I’d expect them to have top-tier longevity on par with or exceeding those on the Tenways. Its other components are great as well, though it doesn’t have quite the suspension travel as the AGO. Range is really where the CrossCore stood out, as we were able to get 100+ miles from a single charge (the AGO X was about half that). I think both bikes are very easy to use, but I think the Yamaha’s Auto Assist mode stood out as extremely user-friendly.

That’s a long-winded way of saying that I think you’d be satisfied with both models. I can’t comment on your request for ease of service, as bike shops vary widely in what they will work on. You may want to reach out to a few, but I suspect the Yamaha would need to be taken to specific dealers. Personally, while I love the AGO X, I would probably choose the CrossCore if it were in my price range; it felt slightly more dialed-in and precise, and also I’d say I preferred its overall comfort.

I have a Trek 2 wheel ebike with pedal assist only that works fine, but I’m old and my balance what it once was and the bar is so high that getting off can be painful. Switching to a 3-wheeled bike seems the answer for me. Are there any 3-wheel bikes that can withstand my weight. Yes , I know I need to shrink and biking is my best exercise.

Thanks

Comment on CYKE Falcon X Review | Serious Exploring Potential by Kurt Spieles https://electricbikereport.com/cyke-falcon-x-review/comment-page-1/#comment-775697 Fri, 03 Jan 2025 17:19:06 +0000 https://electricbikereport.com/?p=51032#comment-775697 The first thing I have to say is, I bought a Falcon S based on your review of the Falcon X and other youtuber’s reviews of the S model. It is not my intention to trash the brand, but CYKE’s advertising and social media presence is trash. It’s not doing anything for the bike brand. From what I’ve seen on their website and Instagram, they’ve done some photo shoots around an urban area with guys doing half-a$$ed skids and wearing no cycling gear or helmets. If it weren’t for EB Report’s and other youtuber’s reviews, I’d have looked past this bike, straightaway. It’s almost a hidden gem and is quite a bargain at $3000. My last Trek Rail was over $6500 and I’m having more fun on this bike, despite its we it’s weight!

Although the Falcon is an incredible bike, it needs some sorting out to make it a truly phenomenal bike. This was a new venture for me, going outside the normal big brand names. If anyone out there is interested, here are some changes I made to mine that I believe will benefit others if they choose a Falcon (S):
Replace the wheels with a strong set of all-mountain, tubeless ready wheels. I chose Hunt. They were very affordable, considerably lighter than the OEM wheels, and of course, tubeless ready.
Install a dropper seat-post. This is a BIG bike and climbing an ebike is different from an analog bike, so dropping your saddle down a bit actually helps with climbing.
Replace the 1990s technology group. I installed the Box Components Prime 9 group, which is lighter, has a wider range, and comes with a single-shift shifter, specific to ebike gear changes. You will annihilate your cassette if you mash through the gears under this motor’s power! last, the rear derailleur has a clutch so no dropped chains or slap like the OEM group causes.
I installed a burlier stem from RaceFace and a set of Renthal handlebars. Once again, this bike is big and benefits from wide, high-quality bars.
Drop the stock crank arms for some shorter, higher quality arms. I went with Lekke 160mm arms. Although I’m 5’11”, the shorter arms work better for me given the motor’s power and I have less pedal strike. Have you ever incurred pedal strike on a trail at 25 + mph??
Go tubeless and install some DH rated MTB tires. I installed Pirelli DH 2.5″, soft-compound tires. I didn’t realize how bouncy and deflection-inducing the stock 3.00 tires were until I changed them out.
Last, if you’re assembling this bike out of the box, check ALL of the hardware for proper torque. I found my brake calipers and a few misc. fasteners and bolts were loose. I also installed a cut down skewer spring and nylon washer behind the battery release lever to quiet it from rattling while riding and replaced the stock phillips head with a metric allen-head bolt. I did the same with the motor’s plastic trim hardware. Who carries a phillips screwdriver with them on the trail?? I also installed some self-adhesive felt around the edge of the battery where it meets the frame. The battery was rattling a lot and this helped substantially.
Disconnect the brake and shift sensor wires (at your own risk!). As the review states, these sensors cut power instantly and are a huge detraction from the bike’s heart, the beastly 160nm M620.

Hello Dear John. I hope you’re well and I wish you a very happy new year. Me again with yet another question; After a few months in Vienna, I’m starting to settle and despite the cold weather I have finally decided to get a bike. Checking the web pages of the two bikes we discussed before, I have realized that Tenways AGOX comes at a special price (around 2000 euros, almost 400 euros off the original price). Considering the 500 euro gap between AGOX and Yamaha Crosscore (still about 2500 euros), is it worth paying 500 more bucks to get a Yamaha? I really like both, my main goal is to commute in the city, and I like the brand of Yamaha (I know very little about TENWAYS). Still, I think 500 euros can be considerable. Help me out, please. Were you in my shoes, which bike would you go for? I prefer comfort, long battery range, an easy-to-use panel, durability, and also preferably something that can be fixed and serviced at every bike shop if needed. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

THIS WOULD MAKE THIS BIKE A LOT MORE STABLE.

On both my torque and my cadence sensors, the PAS level has a much higher impact on my effort than the type of sensor.

If you mostly accelerate as fast as possible, I find the sensor doesn’t matter much.

If you are riding with your kid / friend where the goal is to match speed, only get a torque sensor. They are awesome for fine-grained control.

(The torque sensor / mid-drive combo also gives you that feeling of superman legs, which is a joy, but I’m still pushing on the pedals as hard as I can either way.)

As I replied, the phone is only required for modifying settings. The bike is standalone.

Tires are 20×2.5″, the same as my preferred size on the XP 3.0. They are a little spongy, so I may try to increase pressure a little higher than recommended, but I otherwise prefer them to knobby 3″.

Everyone complains about the lack of suspension, but I guess I’m not that picky as I mostly ride asphalt (which is what this bike is built for). (Deep storm drains can sometimes hit hard, though!) I am considering a swap-in of the suspension seat post from my XP 3.0, but I rode 25 miles of bike trails on the ONE with no complaints.

The manual shifting is (mostly) better than traditional derailleur. It’s super crisp and, I expect, I’m done with having to adjust the alignment every year.

I say “mostly” because, contrary to the review, I cannot shift under load uphill. It is smart enough to shift as soon as you take force off the pedals. My understanding is that this is supposed to happen at the top of the stroke as you switch between feet, but that’s not my experience. (Shifting under load with a derailleur isn’t a _great_ idea, but it does work.)

A major correction to your comment, though: the phone is entirely unnecessary to this process. You _only_ need it if you want to adjust settings, but after that it’s the bike doing all the work. Leave the devices at home and you’ll get the exact same experience.

So far, I’m not entirely sold on automatic shifting because of the no-shift-under-load above. However, I find that if I backpedal just briefly, it’ll shift to the correct gear, and I prefer that to manual shifting.

The Pinion is _really_ nice for stopping, though. You don’t worry about downshifting as you (or the automation) can change gears at rest.

You have the option to set your preferred cadence. Once you reach this cadence, the rider pauses pedaling briefly and the gearbox instantly shifts up to the next gear. With this setting, it’s an automatic transmission. It’s truly amazing and a huge selling point for me. After my first 20 miles, I had the “automatic” transmission feature dialed in and intuitively stopped pedaling during shift points without even thinking about it. Thanks for the great review! I highly recommend this bike as well.

I’d say it depends on your inseam and the kind of riding position you prefer. If you don’t mind a forward lean, the standard stem/handlebar may be OK, but if you prefer a more upright position, a riser handlebar may be a good idea to help you also get a comfortable reach. Depending on your inseam, the standard seatpost may be fine (there was still an inch or two above where I had it set for my 31″ inseam), but you may not quite get full leg extension without upgrading. At 5’11”, I was honestly surprised by how comfortable the bike felt when judging it by its looks; there’s more room than you’d think based on the wheelbase and low frame. I hope that helps!

Hi Pam, if you’re interested in any of the models on this list, you can use the red “Check Best Price” buttons to purchase directly from the manufacturers. We work with each of these brands when reviewing their products, and we choose bikes from reputable companies when assembling any of our Best E-Bikes lists. There can be a lot to learn when planning to purchase an e-bike; we have a buyer’s guide that might help you out, but I’m also happy to answer any questions you might have. Laws will vary depending on where you live, but if you’re unsure, I recommend purchasing a bike with a 750W motor as it’s likely to be legal in most places. Additionally, most models these days ship as Class 2 e-bikes that are also likely to be legal in most areas. I hope that helps!

Unfortunately, we haven’t had the chance to review the Simple Glide yet, but I did look over its webpage. Without a folding frame, it’s likely not going to be as portable as some other options out there, but the seat is removable and the stem is collapsible so that it can be made more portable. It may work in a large SUV with a lot of cargo space, but it may be too long for smaller/mid-size models.

Hi Daniel, thanks for the question. We perform most of our testing on the Virgin River trail system in St. George, UT. I personally rode the Haul LT for each of those 125 miles over the course of a few days, so I can assure you that the bike was capable of this distance in its lowest assist setting. To be clear, the amount of power it put out there was relatively minimal, but I regularly checked to ensure the motor was engaged.

Hi Dawn, great question! The two bikes are comfortable and they both performed well in our testing, but they are honestly quite different. If you prefer simplicity, the Cosmo 2.0 may be a better fit, as it is relatively feature-light and straightforward. With that in mind, it is also relatively basic in what it offers. I would say that the Discover 2 provides more bang for the buck overall, as it is extremely feature-rich with things like turn signals, app connectivity, customizable speed settings, and the ability to switch between cadence and torque sensor modes. On the other hand, this also means that it has more of a learning curve, so it may take some time to get all of the settings to where you like them.

Personally, I’d recommend the Discover 2, but the Cosmo is a fun e-bike with lots of personality.

Hi Jim, thanks for the question! We’ll be answering this in the upcoming Episode 6 of our weekly news and entertainment show on YouTube, called The Weekly Recharge, but I’ll give you the quick rundown. To answer your first question, yes, Yamaha is pulling out of the US at the end of the year, which is why their bikes are priced for clearance. They have stated publicly that they will keep a supply chain for parts and honor their warranty commitments “for years to come.” After the warranty expires, it may be difficult to source parts.

In response to the second question, the CrossCore could likely handle some light off-roading with different tires, but it is designed primarily for urban use.

Hi Stacy, the Pace 500.3 and the Turbo Como are both great bikes that are similar in some ways, but also very different. The Pace is a bit smaller than the Como, so it feels more nimble and energetic. It also has a rear-hub motor with plenty of pep, but it’s not quite as natural-feeling as the Como’s mid-drive. With no suspension, you will feel the bumps more on the Pace, but you could always add a suspension seatpost to help smooth the ride. In either case, both bikes will work well on paved surfaces, but they may be a bit slippery on gravel; you may want to add knobbier tires for better grip.

Hi Robin, thanks for the question! Just a heads up that we’ll be answering this question in Episode 6 of our news and entertainment show on YouTube called The Weekly Recharge. In short, the 20 mph limit is both an upside and a downside. On the upside, it means Tenways bikes are likely to be legal everywhere, and able to be ridden by more riders. On the downside, it means less potential for fun and slower commutes. Personally, I’d prefer them to be switchable between Class 1 and Class 3 modes.

I would rank these as the best e-bikes that are scratching to stay afloat and practically giving away items to make a sale. Not to mention that most of these will lack support or warranty, unless there’s a dealer nearby or you don’t mind waiting and shipping a bike overseas. I personally think there are top name brands that are US based ebikes with a strong warranty and support that is worth the extra dollar.

This review happened at the beginning of the year, and while we’re sad to see them go, they did make some good quality bikes. Yamaha has been reassuring customers they will still offer support and honor warranties made from purchases. E-bikes might be temporarily done in the US for now, but Yamaha isn’t leaving the US entirely.

Consider lowering the seat to shift some of your weight off the handlebars. Padded bike riding gloves might also help. Ideally our legs on the pedals should allow us to extend our legs just before our knees lock in. Might take a little while to get it right for yourself.

They make about 22 models of forks and the D5 model chosen for this bike is one of only 3 of the 22 that is NOT approved for e-bike use by the fork manufacturer. When Velotric talks about their quality standards so highly, why would they choose such a fork? I’m sure it’s because it’s one of the cheapest they can get, but at least choose one that the fork manufacturer qualifies as being approved for use on an e-bike!

However, there is one range number I have some doubts about.
It is hard to believe that the PAS 1 real-world range is 125.3 miles.
It is about the same distance as driving from LA to San Diego.
I am very curious about how it can be achieved. I understand the advantage of the torque sensor on the pedal assist system. And there are some good quality systems using torque sensors. The Bosch system is the one.
Could you please provide the testing route where you tested the Haul LT? The 125.3 miles are just unbelievable.

It is clear from your research that tariffs are exactly what Kamala Harris says they are; they are a national sales tax paid by the American consumer. They are not an external tax paid by the exporting nation to the US government. The main reason I can see for Donald Trumpā€™s wanting to go back to the pre-1900s when tariffs were the federal governmentā€™s primary source of revenue is that would allow him to eliminate all taxes on himself and his fellow billionaires and shift the entire cost of governmental operations to the average tax payers and those of us who donā€™t make enough to pay any taxes at all!

Comparative stats are super helpful. I have 220 miles on my T1 ST Plus. The build and components are great. The bike performs well on the flat and on modest hills. I bought the T1 because I’m 60 and my 2 mile commute includes a 13% grade hill that is 1000 ft long and a few lesser hills. Unfortunately the bike often throws an E5A warning and sometimes shuts down before I reach home. Velotric support said the warning is expected on long steep climbs and offered no repair or return. Curious that the team at Electric Bike Report did not experience this overheating warning on hell hole. I tried an Aventon Soltera on my commute and got the same limited assistance on the steep section but no heat warning. My LBS advised that 350 watt rear hub motors really aren’t capable of steep climbs and that I should consider a mid drive. Hard lesson learned. Hope this comment helps others make the right choice.

I’m almost 70…6’3…230lbs and my research has guided me towards the Ride1Up Turris ST and the Mokwheel Asphalt ST. But I’m hearing the ST version of both might be too small for me and a different ride feel as opposed to the “step over” version? Any validity to this? It is likely that most trike users will have some degree of disability. So light weight, ease of loading in trunk or hatch are really important to know. Please include accurate weights with battery in place and removed (not just the the manufacturer’s advertised weight) in your reviews. Thanks for all your reviews!

Comment on Blix Vika X Review | Next-Gen Tech Is Here! by David L Lambertson https://electricbikereport.com/blix-vika-x-review/comment-page-1/#comment-774941 Sun, 20 Oct 2024 04:20:21 +0000 https://electricbikereport.com/?p=50683#comment-774941 I’ve been waiting for this review for several weeks and was pleased to receive it on my birthday. I’m planning on buying at least one Vika X when my Wellness Wallet on my Medicare Advantage plan kicks in on January 1, and possibly two of them. Was pleased to hear the auto shifting issues may be resolved by firmware updates. Also pleased to hear about the light weight and relatively small folded size. We have been really pleased with our two Blix Aveny Skylines (our bike guy describes them as “bomb proof”) but may switch to two of these Vika X’s if the first one turns out to our liking. Being able to fit two bikes inside our SUV instead of wrangling two bikes onto our bike rack and strapping them in would be a great convenience advantage, especially with not having to attach and unattach the bike rack as well. I am 74 and it’s a bit of a pain. Thanks for the usually thorough and balanced review.

I may watch for Blix to smooth out the rough edges on the Vika X then sell my + and buy an X. I use the Vika+ to run errands around town. We love to ride Michigan’s 13,000 mile+ dedicated paths and trails, but we use our Royal Dutch Gazelle Arroyo C7s. Michigan law allows type 1 bikes on all state trails and on must county or municipal paths and greenways. You can get a state permit from the DNR to use type 2s on these trails. I applied and got a permit that will allow me to use the Vika+ on these trails if I wish.

Comment on Ride1Up CF Racer 1 Review | Carbon Fiber For How Much!? by Edwin https://electricbikereport.com/ride1up-cf-racer-1-review/comment-page-1/#comment-774917 Wed, 16 Oct 2024 20:18:29 +0000 https://electricbikereport.com/?p=43899#comment-774917 Just wanted to share my experience with this brand for the awareness of potential buyers.

I bought a brand new bike(CF Racer 1) expecting it to be ready to ride without any issues, but I encountered a persistent clicking noise in the drivetrain. Despite putting over 20 miles on it, thinking it might just need to be broken in, the problem never went away. Whatā€™s disappointing is that, being a new bike, I didnā€™t expect to deal with derailleur adjustments right off the bat.

Other bike brands Iā€™ve dealt with have been much quicker in handling issues and are even willing to offer significant discounts when customers run into inconveniences. Unfortunately, that wasnā€™t the case here. Their handling of my concern left me disappointed, and I hope others donā€™t experience the same.

If youā€™re considering this brand, just be aware that the customer service might not be as responsive or accommodating as you’d expect, especially if you encounter issues with your purchase.

Sounds like the review of the Freedare Eden is very close to what I have in mind. My only question at this time is the leg inseam you have? I also stand around 5 10 but have an inseam of 28 1/2 in. Some men have longer inseam, maybe 32 in. The difference of an inch or 2 could make a big difference in pedal comfort.

That is correct, and the same is true of any e-bike with a rear hub motor and a throttle. Only e-bikes with mid-drive motors can take advantage of the bike’s gearing when using the throttle.

The rear derailleur and cassette is of absolutely no use unless you are using pedal assist or off power. Is that correct? Otherwise the 1000 watt hub does the work without any assistance from the rear cassette and derailleur.

So the battery can be removed for service through an access panel under the bottom bracket, it just can’t be removed for charging. Many city bikes like the T1 ST Plus are designed similarly.

While it is possible to get bikes in this range with more features, this bike has a certain quality feel to it that I do not feel with my other ebikes. Its really solid feeling and looks very nice. The throttle acceleration is really good and overall the bike can get from 0 to mid-20’s very quick (when in PAS5 mode). Having said that, I feel the bike makes you work a bit hard to maintain 28 (I think thats in large part due to the torque sensor), I noticed when I am peddling 25-26 trying to get to 28, the watts contributed is pulled back quite a bit. Overall though, the bike is really nice if you don’t need to commute at 28 mph speed but are content cruise at let’s say 20-25. You can def get it to 28 but you have to spin fairly rigorously to maintain that against any wind or slight incline. I have 5 ebikes and this is the one I am always most wanting to grab for most of my jaunts about town. Long commutes (>10 miles) I break out the Kepler……Oh yes, I also really like the torque sensor. I have a real 100% torque sensor on my Velotric T1ST and several cadence sensor bikes, this is my favorite – Its in between, it does not surge or feel glitchy like the T1ST does at times but it does not take over like the cadence sensors either. What is really cool is that there are several ways to set the torque sensor to adjust how much pure assist you get and what PAS level. The road tires are great as its really a road bike, so many of these bikes come with knobbies when I suspect the vast majority are being ridden on the road where they are loud and wear out quick. Good stuff!

Her list seems reasonable, soft seat, sooth acceleration and a comfortable meeting position. I ride a motorcycle, but I am happy to purchase a second until. Can you help us? Thank you,

Comment on Lectric XP 3.0 Review | Feature-Packed & Fun For Only $1K by Glenn https://electricbikereport.com/lectric-xp-3-review/comment-page-1/#comment-774806 Fri, 27 Sep 2024 20:18:23 +0000 https://electricbikereport.com/?p=38894#comment-774806 I agree with Captain Quirk’s comments. Comparing the 2.0 with the new 3.0 would have saved me a few thousand dollars. My wife and I wore out a pair of XP 2.0’s and bought the new 3.0’s. While the hydraulic brake upgrades are nice, the new PWR PAS programming in the 3.0 ruins the experience for us.

The PAS on the 2.0 was based on speed, which made the bikes a great equalizer. This allowed my 230 pound out of shape self to pretty much keep pace with with my much better shape wife without having to kill myself to do so.

The new PWR PAS programming in the 3.0 is based on current. Each PAS is supposed to supply a set amount of current. The result, my lighter wife leaves me in the dust and now we can’t enjoy a ride together. To add insult to injury, we’ve found that this programming isn’t consistent. If we switch bikes, there isn’t quite as much of a difference.

We also like to ride trails, but we like to take our time and be careful riding in either PAS 1 or PAS 3. On our 2.0’s PAS 1 would average 8mph and PAS 2 would be 11mph, which was a perfect comfort level for us. On the 3.0, the speed chart in this article is spot on, and in PAS1 exceeds our comfort level for speed on many of the trails we ride. This also kills the granularity in speed options you have. By PAS 3 you’re already pushing 20mph.

Now about the ridiculous throttle behavior changes. On the 2.0, when in any PAS 1 or above, the throttle would override your PAS setting and apply up to max current if you commanded it. This allowed you to use it for extra umph up a hill or from a stop. On the 3.0, you have to bump up your PAS setting to adjust your throttle. That has you starting off in PAS 5, or have to worry about hitting the +/- way too often during a ride.

All that just to “increase” battery life…. I’d rather be able to ride with my group for a shorter ride than ride alone for a bit longer. If battery life is important to solo riders, then give us a way to choose between speed or pwr governed PAS, or let us adjust current at each PAS so we can achieve the speeds we feel comfortable at.

The behavior of the motor cutting off at different speed limits in each pedal assist setting is totally normal on an e-bike with a cadence sensor! Some brands have used a current-based approach instead of a speed-based approach to give a more natural feel for those who prefer it. Some riders like the ability to dictate their speed by the PAS setting though.

What I notice is the lack of design for the handlebars. I notice in many pictures, even though seats have backs, short people can’t lean back because they have to lean forward to reach the handlebars except on the recumbent trike. That really limits selection. Handlebars need to be made adjustable for height just like the seat is adjustable. The recumbent handlebars on a regular trike would be helpful.
